The idea
Waddington drew life as a landscape of valleys, and a growing thing follows a chreod down them — not a fated line, but a developmental path: resilient enough to correct its course when the world knocks it aside, open enough to branch when it reaches a fork.
A place moves the same way. Down valleys it cannot easily leave — a warming sea, a receding meadow. Toward ridges where the smallest push changes everything — a shoreline one decision from protection, a meadow one season from return. Place intelligence is the instrument that finds the ridges.
The instrument
The record — papers, datasets, and a knowledge graph — woven into a single spine. Ask the place a question in plain language and get an answer that cites its sources; never a claim without a quote. And real measurement, not vibes: canopy, heat, biodiversity, computed on the ground you point at.
A patch is a piece of real ground a community keeps. It behaves like the place itself — aware it is alive, aware of who you are to it. Every observation is evidenced. An AI steward inhabits it: grounded or silent, it narrates what changed and drafts cited replies that people co-sign. Roles are belonging, not permissions.
Observations become part of what is known. What is known grounds the tending. The place learns from its people; the people learn from the place.
Instance one
Ten and a half square kilometres where the Salish Sea meets one of Canada's most endangered ecosystems — Garry oak meadow — braided with urban deer, ancient clam gardens and camas, and an unusually devoted community of stewards. The hardest, richest place to begin. If Chreod can read and tend a place this dense, it can do it anywhere.
